Spinal Manipulation
- What it is: An extension of joint mobilizations, manipulations are a faster manner to address joint dysfunction and pain. As stated in the Maitland Joint Mobilizations Concept, mobilizations are a graded application of manual/hands on therapy. They consist of joint oscillations that can reduce pain and improve range of motions. Manipulations are high velocity(quick), low amplitude(small movement) application of the mobilization concept. When applied to the spine these techniques can reduce pain and limitations that would not respond traditionally to a mobilization in the same fashion.
- Who it will benefit: Patients that suffer with back/neck pain and stiffness can see good results from this type of technique. Often times there is an increase in a person’s mobility and range of motion following a manipulation. Patient’s can also be noted with a faster recovery period following more acute low back injuries and sprains. As with all manual therapy techniques, they need to be bolstered by corrective stabilization or strengthening exercises to achieve maximum long term potential.
