- What it is: Vestibular rehabilitation is a set of interventions designed to address sensory deficits as they are related to motion, equilibrium, and spatial orientation. More commonly vestibular rehab has been utilized to assist with improving symptoms ranging from vertigo and dizziness to age related balance disorders. Dizziness, losses of balance, and a risk of falls as well as the dysfunction and lack of independence that accompanies these disorders can be extremely burdensome on patients.
Without a sense of balance and spatial awareness navigating ones environment or performing simple mobility tasks can become hardships for people who suffer with vestibular disorders. Vestibular rehab works to return these natural processes to that stable state and can allow for improve functional mobility without a fear of injury.
- Who it benefits: Patients who suffer with balance related disorders including vertigo, unilateral and bilateral vestibular disorders, and age related balance deficits can benefit from vestibular rehab. The vestibular system can contribute to balance and gait related deficits as well as postural control and spatial awareness limitations. Rehabilitating these losses of equilibrium can be multifocal including posture and musculoskeletal strengthening and stabilization. Gradual progressive treatments with associated exercises can work to return a patient to their prior functional level.
